What
kind of Markings for She Inkstone?
Ever since there was paper and Chinese ink writing there was ink
stone well. The earliest existing reference goes back to five thousand years ago. Often
ink stone wells are simply called inkstones. The ordinary use of inkstone is to use the
ink stick to rub on the stone to make the ink for writing and painting. Not every
piece of stone can be made into an inkstone. For example, a stone that is too rough, when
used to make the ink will come out with too much deposits that is damaging to the painting
brush. Some might come out too thin and not with enough intensity to make a lasting
painting. Some inkstone will absorb the ink quickly. Thousands of years ago the scholars
and artists found that certain stones from a specific region, especially after the stone
has been mined and buried under the ground for thousands of years make the best ink wells.
This is how She inkstones became one of the Four Treasures of Chinese Study. Because of
the popularity of inkstone collecting, the decorative carvings of an inkstone became a
recognized and distinguished art itself pursued by artists and craftsmen throughout
Chinese history.
Thousands of years of She Inkstone Collecting --- One of the Four
Treasures of Chinese Study
1) The Value and Significance of Chinese Study Object Collecting is best
Illustrated by the Following exhibition at:
National
Palace Museum in Taiwan
From the introduction
of this exhibition, more than two hundred years ago, Chinese Emperor Ch'ien-lung feared of
losing the traditional art of inkstone carving, commanded scholars creating a catalog of
the instones collected by the emperors court. Four pieces of inkstone in the catalog are
shown on the following web page:
http://www.npm.gov.tw/exhbition/cink0003/ink_c2.htm
Click on anything that you can click on the museum page, in this way you get to see all
the pieces!
2) The following exhibition is by the Qin Wang Society in Taiwan:
North Song calligrapher Cai Ran (1012 -- 1067) once came to She county hoping
to get a She ink well. He put out a table in front of the Changqin Tower (this can
be seen from the painting by Yao Bin) to sell his calligraphy. His calligraphy was
immediately grabbed by the people walking by as soon as he wrote them. For the ink
he brought a brick ink well. It absorbs the ink, so he often spent a lot of time to make
the ink and sometimes his calligraphy did not come out as expected because of the lack of
appropriate ink in the ink well. One day, an old monk saw this and laughed hard "Your
calligraphy is full of vitality, but your ink stone is causing you failed brush
strokes." Cai said "Not to pretend in front of you, I came here not to sell
calligraphy, but to get a good She Ink Stone." The monk loved Cai Ran's talent, he
returned to the temple and brought him a She Ink Well. Looking at this Ink Stone; it is
hard and durable, feels the dampness of the deep mountain and smooth like a baby's skin.
Easy to make the ink with a touch of water, the color of the ink is clean and transparent.
Knocking with a finger, the sound is crisp and clear. Do not damage the brush and stores
the ink for a long time without freeze or dryness. Cai Ran loved it and could not put it
down. He spontaneously wrote: Pure as jade with delicate fine grains, No sound
heard while rubbing the Ink Stick, Anyone would ask me to exchange for this, I would ask
for fifteen cities of Ching Dynasty. From this we can see how much the scholars treasured
the She Ink stones.
Almost every historically known Chinese artist or scholar including Wang Xizhi
(303--361), Su Dongbo (1037 -- 1101), O Yangxiu (1007 -- 1072), Li Bai (701 -- 762) etc.
had visited She county, Hui Zhou in seeking of a priceless She Ink Well. Because of this
and also the very different prosperous economic period especially the very famous
Huizhou salt merchants that were dominant in the whole southern China, brought to this
region a lot of historical existence of Architectural (the famous Hui Style Houses can be
seen from the movie --- Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon), monumental calligraphy
carvings left by the famous poets and artists. Wealth and natural beauty like Huangshan,
Jiu Huashan, etc. inspired and produced a lot of historically very well known artists and
scholars. Huang, Binghong (1865-1955), even though he was born in the neibouring
province Zhe Jian, because his ancestry was from Hui Zhou, he spent many many years
cultivating and teaching in Huizhou. At the famous Archery monument town Tanyue, his old
resident is currently a museum commemorating him as one of the greatest Chinese master.
What is the Geological Components of She inkstones
She inkstones mostly are rare slate or powerdered sandy slate stones, not
like Cheng Ni stones which is soft even a finger nail can leave a mark on the stone.
She inkstone is hard and as smooth as a baby's skin. Not everywhere in Huizhou can dig out
a place and be able to find stones good for making ink stones. Even if there was a mine
being found, may be there is a section with thickness of 0.4 to 4 meters can be exploited.
Among the exploited stones, less than 1.87% can be taken for ink stone candidates. Most of
the slate stones will be too rough or too easy to chip to be able to make into ink stones.
The different grains and marks are different chemical compositions after the slate stone
being oxidized. For example, Gold marks is brown iron ore (limonite). Gold Star: pyrite.
There is one kind of red inkstone which is mudstone mostly close to Duan inkstone, it also
has different type of eyes. It is a new founding in Huizhou area, locally it's called She
Red. Currently we do not offer this kind of stones. The good inkstone pieces are the old
mine stones which means the stone was exploited hundreds or thousands years ago and being
buried and oxidized underground. The two major difference of old and new are: new stones
have a lot of fine pores that absorbs ink. New stones will not have crisp metal sound when
knocked on the finger tip. A good piece of old stone has very crisp metal sound even as
one touches their hand through the stone. To be able to identify an old piece of stone is
also from experience. Also a good piece of stone should not have calcite marks or even
hair thin cracks. Also the old mine stone feels very cold and damp.
-
Where are the Major She Inkstone Mines
The She ink stone mines are mainly distributed in the region of
old Hui Zhou. By old Hui Zhou we mean a few dynasties back. In the old days Hui Zhou
included the region of Wuyuan, currently in Jiangxi province which has some mines that
were exploited around Tang Dynasty (1200 years ago). There are some hundreds to thousands
year old ink stone mines in Shexian (currently a county in Hui Zhou), Xiuling, Jingxian,
Huangshan etc. According to geological research, this region was an ocean of sea four
billion years ago. After the stones being mined and buried again under the ground for
another thousand years, fossilized, moved, and brushed by water and sand, what you get is
a good ink stone.
There are several major kinds of She inkstones from different mines. All these
mines were in the Old Huizhou region, until it was subdivided in history. They are
distributed among the same mountain ridge. This is how the Dragon's tail and Dragon's head
names come from.
Wuyuan, Jianxi Dragon's Tail stone
This is the most exploited and famous She inkstone. To collectors this is also
the most valuable kind of stones. Among people who know about She inkstones, the name She
inkstone has it's specific meaning ---- stone from Wuyuan, Jianxi, but carved by an artist
in She county. So a genuine She inkstone is a Dragon's Tail stone carved by a She artist.
For thousands of years this has been the case and still it's true for serious collectors.
There are several reasons for this. First of course is these stones are highest quality as
inkstones. They are very smooth and easy to make ink from. The ones that are buried under
water are even better and rare. As one holds in the hand the dampness is immediately felt.
These inkstones really matches the She inkstone fame: One can breath on the stone to make
ink out of it. Another reason is the look of the stone. They are usually very dark, the
gold star and gold patch is very alive and shinning. They are like floating on the stone.
Because of these reasons, they have been known for thousands of years. Of course this
leads to rarity. They become more and more rare. Nowadays it's very hard to find pieces
that are perfect. Almost all of them have some defects. The most common one is undesirable
stone veins that does not match with its grain. Another one is hair thin cracks that are
not easy to see by eye. For a big piece of Dragon's Tail stone, if the plate part for
rubbing the inkstick is perfect, it's called a wonderful rare piece of She inkstone.
By the begining of Song dynasty, genuine old mine dragon's tail stone was already
exhausted from production, nowdays, only small pieces or limited number of big good pieces
can be found from carvers or collectors. Most of our collections are these kind of
inkstones.
Daban Gold Star Patch, also Jianxi stone

This is another major media that She artists and merchants like to make inkstone from.
They are not very expensive, good for making inkstones. Its easy to find big pieces with
beautiful Gold patches. Artists like them because they can use them to make big pieces of
landscape, figure, or any other impressive carvings. Almost all achieved artists have big
pieces of their work on this kind of stones including Jianchen, Sulu, Guihai, Yongchen,
Mingxue, and others. We will get some examples of these for demonstrating. We do not
collect these pieces. We have some of these pieces for our viewers, because some pieces
are so special, its impossible to see another similar one again, some of the art works are
so beautiful and also they provide an inexpensive alternative for some artists who need a
big piece of inkstone for use, and these inkstones are more affordable and practical. For
the few famous carving artists, because their art works are so well appreciated, inkstones
by them on these big pieces are also becoming valuable. At the same time, if anyone is
interested in importing these as commercial inkstones for use, both price limit and
quantities can be met.
Daguyuan stone, from She county, Huizhou. The mountain is also identified as
the Dragon's Head
In She county,
there are ink stone mines
that were also exploited thousands of years ago. They have beautiful very dark inkstones
and easier than old mine dragon's tails to find perfect pieces because it has not been
exploited much for the last thousand years. These inkstones feels like baby's skin, tappes
with very crisp metal sound, and they makes wonderful fine ink just like the dragon's tail
stone. The story goes, people dig out the inkstones from She county and ship them to
Wuyuan, Jianxi and was buried in the mountains of Wuyuan. Then they were digging out in
Wuyuan to be presented to the inkstone merchants, and the stones were really being highly
evaluated and appraised. Daguyuan mine is one of these old mines. These mines
have been supporting the local inkstone economy. Large inkstones made from these mines are
exported to Japan and sold as Lao Kang She inkstones. For most people cannot tell the
difference between the Dragon's Tail She inkstone and Daguyuan stone. We tell the
difference by experience and also by their character. They usually are very dark, some
have silver stars. They have big pieces with no defects at all. For most artists, the
prices between two different stones can be very big. For example, from Yongchen, a genuine
old mine dragon's tail stone, he can ask for 15,000 RMB. For a good size inkstone made of
Daguyuan stone, he will just ask for a few hundred RMB.
Jiujian Brush Sweep Mark stone, from Jiujian, Jianxi.
These are newly found old mine stones. Because they are very smooth and have
beautiful fine marks that look as if a brush has been swept through it and also they have
very intricate gold star patch marks too. We saw some very beautiful pieces produced by
very good artists. For example Guihai likes to use these to carve his story like pieces.
His unique figure carving combined with different gold patch formations on the top of the
stone, classic Chinese stories like: Dragon's daughter Sheppering, Dreams of Zhuanzi
(Famous Chinese philosopher), Fairy Lady Playing Music are vividly presented on
these pieces. But also there is Old Mine Brush Sweep Dragon's Tail stones, they are
very rare and much much more expensive. We have one piece at the end of page sold.
These stones are softer than others and also a little bid easier to find. The
rare one's are perfect Fish Egg grain ones. Sometimes it's rare to see a piece with line
thin eyebrows marks in pairs. But most of the Jade mountain inkstones are cheap and not
easy to make ink. Produced in quantities in Jianxi province.
Old Mine Miao Qian Qing ---- Front Temple Blue
These inkstones are found in front of a temple in south of She county at the
village of Zhou Jia Cun. Beautiful almost jade like green color, sometimes with beautiful
long eyebrows marks like the one jccarv131 under Jiangchen's inkstone portfolio.
Looks and feels just like a
Duan insktone, these are found in Anhui, Xiuling county. Able to find big flawless pieces.
Sulu Chen likes to use these carve into copies of old antique inkstones, by smoking and
other procedure, they look like perfect real "antiques". But these are different
from cheap molded inkstones from inferior casting material, he actually spent a lot of
time and skill to carve these Duan look like inkstones.
Besides the different kinds of stones from different mines, the old mine and the new
mine, also there are different marks and grains for each different stone. To learn
about the appearance of each markings, please scroll to the end of the page and examine
every reference pieces that were introduced by us to collectors.
For
example, the most rare stone in our collection is the Jade patch Dragon's Tail stone.
Looking from the front, even most of
the stone carvers cannot tell it's a dragon's tail stone, because almost no one ever seen
this kind of stone. But from the back, it's immediately identifiable. Its a turtle back
grain stone. The layers has a formation like a turtle's back. Looking at the side, we can
see where the Jade layer is formed on top of the ordinary slate stone. Rare stones like
this are treasured by artists and collectors. We can show you a very rare inkstone that
were found by Sulu Chen. He saw this in the brook when he was walking on the path in
Wuyuan, Jinxi while he was exploiting stones. He paid someone jump in the water and had
it picked up from the water. The She inkstone is wrapped by a layer of white crystal. In
the middle of the stone, it has a white formation look like a white goose and there is
another white formation look like the egg of the goose at the ink well. Sulu take it's
formation, carved the very minimum and made it into a priceless inkstone. He sold this for
3000 RMB to a very known local collector, last year we heard museums want to pay three
million RMB for it. From what I know, the owner did not want to sell it.
Among the two most rare and best Dragon's Tail stones are Eyebrows Mark and Jade
Belt Gold Star (or Color Belt Silver Star, As rare, but the marks are not as obvious)
stones. They are the most rare and very best quality of inkstones. An un-carved
piece could demand for a lot of money.
Various Water
Wave Mark, any meaningful Gold Star or Gold Star
Patch Dragon's Tail stones are also very valuable. Some stones have combinations of
both. Any little pieces of Dragon's Tail stones with no defects can worth quite a
bit of money. The most known small collector's items are the ornamental inkstones, they
are beautiful pieces to play in hand, put on the desk or end tables, gifts for friends and
She inkstones are always treasured gifts for foreign diplomats, presidents, and
important government figures.
How to Select Collectible She Inkstones
Almost everyone visited She county and complaining the inkstones there are so
expensive. There are three reasons for it.
1) One is She carving artists are expensive. As you will see later, they are not
ordinary craftsmen anymore. Besides She inkstones are not just a widely collected
crafts any more, a lot of the pieces are sold as art pieces, among the known and
recognized artists, each artist has a price range and they keep moving up. Prices for She
inkstones peaked in 1995. As a whole market prices came down a lot. As the Japanese (the
biggest buyer of She inkstones and Huizhou inksticks) economy recovering, prices started
to move up again since last year. But even during this big down turn, the few best artists
kept there prices up and moving higher. As they are always in demand.
2) Second almost all the artists I know only use their hands and chisel working on
each carving piece. The only time they use a machine to help is to cut a piece of stone.
Even the last procedure of smoothing the stone is done by hand. Our artist Libing does all
the rubbing and smoothing by himself, because he is afraid someone else will destroy the
very fine, straight, and delicate sides of the inkstone that he carved out, look
simple but its a very special skill not everyone can do. He does not even trust his own
wife to help him. Generally speaking, labour fee in She county is higher than any
surronding areas, even a wooden or silk box that's made there cost more, but we have to
say the qualities are also much better and no where can compare to it. Nowdays most of the
boxes you see in the local store or studio are made in Jianxi province. All the artists we
work with, we pay for the boxes for them and we always get the best quality. Some of the
pieces came with the boxes, so you are going to see some inconsistancy in the boxes.
Because we do not mark up for any of these services, you are going to see our prices
reflect the quality of boxes.
3) The mark up in
local stores and local studios are fairly high. Some of the pieces that we purchased from
the studios, we noticed their prices are higher than what we can offer here. For example,
the following piece was marked at 800 RMB, this is approximately $100. We offer it here at
$65. Can they get $100 in China, very likely they can, because there are so many
collectors in China for She inkstones and always there are buyers from other Asia
countries. What We hope is through our service, more and more people will learn about the
artistry in Huizhou area and more and more people learn to appreciate the service that we
provide. Of course we need all the patronage that we could get to keep this web site
running and keep our business running. We also try to introduce other products and
services to obtain the funding for our cause of introducing the culture of this small
closed off area in China.
Under most circumstances, what you pay is what you get. In this case, you pay a
little bit more, but what you get is genuine original pieces from each individual artist,
not mass produced commercial products! For a collector, the very first step is to
distinguish between commercial inkstones and unique collectibles. Same as in any other
collectibles items -- rarity defines value. Currently there are several kinds of
commercial products.
1) Large quantities of inkstones
made of newly mined stones. These inkstones are very affordable, most of the carvings are
done by machines. Some of them can be good alternatives for use by students and artists.
 |
| Both of these are commercial inkstones. The one
on the left is imported from Jianxi province by She merchants. Made of newly mined stone,
carved by half machine and half hands. Not mention the rough carving on the sides, the
rubbing surface is not even smooth. The right one is hand carved by an already bankrupted
inkstone factory in She county. Its all hand crafted for exporting to Japan and made from
Daguyuan Old Mine Stone. The Daguyuan stone is a really superb quality inkstone. While the
newly mined stone is not really quite suitable as inkstone. Generally speaking Jianxi
stones, old mine or new mine, they are not as dark as Daguyuan stones. The white dots on
the right one are silver dots (color white). The left one cost half in She county
compare to the right one. |
2) Large quantities of non-Dragon's Tail old mine inkstones made in
Jianxi province. Some are carved by machine. Some are one format of simple carvings or
marks. They are carved more or less the same. The boxes are also made the cheapest way.
They are also very inexpensive. There are quite a bit of local merchants who import these
from Jianxi province and sell them in She county as She inkstones. They are much richer
than the individual artists.
These
are commercially made from Jiujian Brush Swept Mark Old Mine stone. Eventhough they make
large quantities of them, at least they are not so badly made. There is no
collecting value, but they are good inexpensive alternatives for artists use. The
boxes are not that well made to cut costs.

Anyone interested in
importing these, we can help you out!
We just put up some
examples, there are a lot of selections of these inkstones. We do not intend to import
these, unless on request by any individual. |
3) Another kind of commercial products are replicates of
famous artist pieces, especially from known artists like Sulu Chen, Jianchen Fang,
Mingxue, Guihai, Yongchen, etc. There merchants hire carvers and make these elaborated
duplicates. If you see the same pattern of carvings in different stores, then you know how
they get there. The workers at the other end usually get very little pay. What you
enriched are the merchants pockets. This last winter we were at She county for more than
six weeks. We saw how this is happening. Sulu Chen had a new design he calls it: Bright
Moon Shinning through the Pine Needles! He is the grandmaster of She classic inkstone
carving. But he is a very slow worker. One piece of art work takes him usually a long
time. When we visited him, he showed us his new work which he has not finished yet. He
told us this is something that no one did it before. The following week when we visited
one of the local store, a replicates of his piece already appeared in the store and cost
much less. Of course, we lost our interest in Sulu Chen's piece too. We told Sulu Chen the
story, he feels helpless, all he could say was he cannot even have any helper now. Because
through the helpers, the street learn what he is carving.
4) Besides "She" commercial inkstones, She county also makes a lot of
different kinds of other commercial inkstones. For example, ChengNi inkstones. Because
ChengNi basically is mud clay stones, it's soft and very easy to carve. Merchants can
really hire very cheap beginner carvers to make these inkstones in large quantities. Here
we can show you an example. Click on the images for details. Any importer interested in
this, we can point you to the right supplier. They make various designs and various sizes.
Another kind of commercial instone is inkcake inkstones. They are made from a mould just
like making an inkcake, their appearance can be very attractive after some gold and brown
colors applied and they look like antique. They called "Mu Yan".
She Inkstone Carving Artists
She inkstones used to be collected as a valuable crafts. No carving artist were
ever recorded in history. Inkstone carving were not treated as an art until Qing dynasty.
Mi Fu was a calligrapher, artist, and a collector. He was the first one in Qing Dynasty
who started to take the natural beauty of the inkstone into consideration of the carving
design. But he did not make much impact. His view dissappeared for another few hundred
years. But for the last fifty years, the father and son: Qinshu Fang and Jianchen Fang
forever changed how She inkstone carving is being viewed and evaluated. Especially
Jianchen Fang who brought this thousands year old crafts into modern art. His
innovation not just changed how She instones are being appreciated and collected, more
important is he brought new blood into this profession. All the carving artists including
the old and young, the skilled or the new apprentice are affected by his idea and
innovations. We see these traces in Sulu Chen's work, even though he still is more toward
the traditional carving style. The piece below is by Sulu Chen. Here he used the beautiful
gold patch on the stone and the water wave mark in the rubbing area, the storm and the
stillness in the cave is presented without any carving. The contrast could not be shown
better. While if according to traditional design, the craftsmen would knock out or carve
on the gold patch on the top and carve a full of landscape scenes on the stone.

1) Jianchen is the richest and most famous She inkstone carving artist.
He is called the soul of inkstone carving. For the last
twenty years, he exhibited all over Asia including Taiwan, Hongkong, Singapore, Japan,
...... He sold one of his inkstone carving to the Japanese museum for 70, 000 USA dollars.
We noticed all the younger generations respected his work and a lot of them have
collections of his art works or his student Mingxue's art work. Jianchen is a very
generous man. Besides working closely with his students, he brings a lot of exposure
to his students by providing opportunities of exhibitions to them. He is also very
generous in helping other people's students. We saw quite a bit of his signatures and
comments on the rubbings of young carving artists who are students of Sulu Chen. In
this way he enriched others and others respected him as one of the greatest artists.
2) Qinshu Fang -- Father of Jianchen Fang. Chengxia Fang -- sister of Jianchen Fang
Qinshu is the older generation of She carving artists. Layed the foundation for
a lot of the yonger generations. We noticed all the very good carvers are started with a
very good classic carving skill including Jianchen Fang. Qinshu Fang, his son Jianchen
Fang, and daughter Chengxia Fang became the heiloom of She inkstone carving family. They
were reported repeatedly on newspapers, central TV stations, and filmed by different film
production companies. A family not just famous, but also made major contributions to
Huizhou art. Here we invite you to view one of the piece that was carved by Chengxia's
studio artists and under the guidance of Qinshu Fang. Total lenth 91 feet long,
height 54 inches, and 1.8 inches thick. It took them two years. After this,
Qinshu Fang retired and his daughter took over the studio of her father.
Because he stoped carving, his inkstone pieces became very valuable. He sold a small piece
to a museum for 18,000 RMB a year ago. No where except his own family collections you can
see his pieces now!
Please scroll to the right
to see a complete view, click on the image to see a partial detail.
3) Sulu Chen --- Same generation as Jianchen Fang. Currently She inkstones are
being classified as Cheng (Sulu) style and Fang (Jianchen) style. He is just like Jianchen
Fang recorded in all the written books about She inkstones. As famous as he is, he is a
loaner. He had a lot of student early in his career. But for the last ten years, he has
been working alone. Because of this, his pieces are also worth a lot of money. He does not
produce much at all and he has a lot of serious collectors in China, Taiwan, Hongkong,
Singapore, and other Asia countries. Eventhough he did not work closely with his students
for the last ten years, they in a lot of way actually enriched a lot of his fame. Because
no merchants in the local county had any of the students signed their names, they always
would tell you any good pieces were by Sulu Chen, because he is recorded in the book. We
would like to change this and would like to introduce some of the even younger generations
and we see that they are very talented and they will become recognized.
4) Mingxue -- God son and one of the most talented latest student of Jianchen
Fang.
5)Ke, Guihai -- One of Sulu Chen's student who not just surpassed his teacher
but also developed his own style and expanded his own horizan. Even Sulu saids he is the
best now.
6) Ba, Yongchen -- Oldest student of Sulu Chen. Sulu Chen's landscape were in
the same style as Qinshu Fang. The classic realism -- very real and detailed. As you can
see, in Yongchen's landscape we see a totally different style. It's like the free hand
brush painting, not everything is seen immediately, but full of imagination and the more
you look at it, the more you find in the pictures. Not to say that he redefined how She
inkstone landscape carving is, he complemented the Chen style or completed the Chen style.
He is a very solid classic landscape carver and a very talented artist. We captured some
of the drawings that he did on the stones, as this is always the first step of carving. A
good drawing and an artist eye is so important to how later they can achieve in stone
carvings.
7)Ke, Congyun --- Jianchen's newest student!
All the following pieces are perfect ornamental collector's items by
Libing and Yonghong, they are all sold. Usually you will never see a same piece again,
from here you can also learn to identify the different markings of She inkstone!
