What's ChengNi Stone Teapot?
|
There are many kinds
of ChengNi. Please refer here for the Kelned
ChengNi inkstone
that was put into the four famous inkstones in China after Ming Qing dynasty because the
exploration for the Red Thread inkstone in Shan Dong was too difficult and it's fame
gradually faded away. The ChengNi stone used here for the teapots are natural ChengNi
stone explored from Lin Yan mountain near Tai Hu in Jiangsu province. Mainly in two colors
as they are shown in our teapots collection. The Eel Belly Yellow
--- yellowish look with black dots and the Rose Purple with Blue
---- with the carving powder on it it's more like beige color with reddish blue.
Exploration of these stones goes back as early as 1700 years ago. |

Zhang Wenbiao, born in 1969 and
student of old generation carver Yan, Quangen. As you can see from the image he is
recorded in the "China's National Crafts Masters Catalog" third volume published
in 2001. After the 1979 Kunming International Fair his work started to be recognized
internationally. Later, local paper Wu Xian Daily, Far Eat Information, and Suzhou TV
station reported his work too. Many known and reputable magazines showcased some of his
work. Since then he took his opportunity formed the Yi Bao Studio, working with about ten
most famous artists in the town. Now he mostly manages he studio and promoting his fellow
carvers work. This year we had a chance to visit him many times and worked with the
carvers in his studio to bring to you some of their exquisite ChengNi stone teapots. To
help you to learn to collect fine collector's teapots, we also brought over some
common ones that are very inexpensive, but cute and unique gift stone teapots. Each
collector's teapots are custom carved. Some took very very long time and tentative
collaboration between artists. In the following page we will introduce each artists to you
for your reference. Though Zhang, Wenbiao does not and did not carve any of the stone
teapots we presented here, he does a more important job of promoting the ChengNi stone
carvings in his hometown. And he is doing a great job. |
