Another
made look like "antique" inkstone is on EBay, fortunately we have one that's
exactly the same and made from the same mold. We seen other inkstones made from composit
material being pressed into a mold. While dealers are calling these "Antique,
even "circa 1925"", sounds really like "antique", even give you
"expertee" opinion of the year it's made. Well here is our opinion!

For anyone who is reading this, please do not
get it wrong that these fake "antiques" do not worth anything, they are
beautiful objects and the maker is definetly very talented. Take the example of this
molded inkstone, the person who made the mold is absolutely very talented and did a great
job of reverse carving the wooden mold. The characters are very well depicted. One glance
anyone who knows the story of the eight immortals are immediately recognized. As far as I
know, reverse wood carving itself is a dying art. What we do not like is people sell these
as antiques. Actually these are made from composite material, some of
them were baked after it's out of the mold. This one is one of the better one I've seen. A
lot of these are seen with very intricate carvings of dragons, there is a web site devoted
selling these as antique and they are selling for $400+. To be polite, we will not list
the web address here. Hope the web master will realize it's conscious and indicating what
truly these inkstones are made from. On Ebay, we often see black dragon inkstones, oxen
with a boy, ... they belong to the same category. At least we appreciate sellers do not
call them "Antique" and they do not list them at sky high prices. These pieces
are made in quantities and the material is usually very cheap, they should not be asking
too much for it and they have no collecting value. If you are a buyer, buy because you
like the design, not because you want to start your collecting of inkstones. Because they
really should not be called inkstones. They are one format of souvenir's items. |
Some moldings are top and bottom whole pieces, these ones are not that easy to identify, but the tapping sound from the finger tip give away immediately! |
